Fish supplies in Zamboanga Sibugay are dwindling, and it’s largely due to the destruction of areas for reproduction, including mangroves. This has left fisherfolk in the area concerned about the future of their livelihoods. However, there is hope. Roberto “Ka Dodoy” Ballon and his organization Coalition of Municipal Fisherfolk Associations in Zamboanga Sibugay is working towards addressing this issue.

Their efforts include a focus on mangrove reforestation and nurseries, as well as the protection of mangroves, sea grasses, and coral reefs through coastline guards and fish wardens. They are also implementing regular garbage collection, solid waste management initiatives, and oyster gardening and marketing to help strengthen the local economy.

One unique aspect of Ballon’s projects is their commitment to involving women and children in all aspects of their journey as a coastal community. Each member is given specific roles, but they are allowed to work independently, with a shared goal of promoting the three pillars of enterprise, empowerment, and environment.

To succeed in their endeavors, Ballon’s projects rely heavily on partnerships and collaborations with other organizations and individuals who share their vision for a sustainable future. He added that love is also important in the process. He coined the term “co-love-oration”. “We have to love the government and make ‘love-ying’ efforts.”

While the challenges facing the fishing industry in Zamboanga Sibugay are significant, it is through initiatives like this that hope remains for the future of the community.
